Monoprinting: Coastal Inspiration

Saturday, May 16, 2026, 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

1-Day In-Person Workshop

Instructor: Kathryn Hilton

Monterey Peninsula College, 980 Fremont St., Monterey, CA

Back by popular demand—Taking our cue from gorgeous local coastal views, we will use Gelli plates to create colorful monoprint landscapes. If Gelli plates are new to you, no worries!  This class is a good fit for both experienced and new artists. Each technique will be demonstrated step-by-step, starting with a single color, then building up to mixing and layering paints and textures. All images are printed on heavy cotton paper, without a printing press, for one of a kind, vibrant paintings.

What is monoprinting?

Gelli plate monoprinting is a playful, low-pressure way to explore creativity, especially if you’re just getting started. Think of it as a mix between painting and printmaking where there are no rules and plenty of happy surprises. You roll acrylic paint onto a soft gel plate, press textures into it using everyday objects like leaves, bubble wrap, or even your fingers, then lift the print onto paper. Each pull is one of a kind, which takes the pressure off and invites you to experiment, layer, and follow your curiosity.

For beginners, the magic really happens when you let go of perfection and start building layers. Try light colors first, then add darker ones, or pull ghost prints from leftover paint to create unexpected depth. Bright colors can bring instant energy to your prints and help you see how layers interact. The more you play, the more your own style starts to show up.
